In practice, however, it does not determine the quality or reliability of the content being published. Following changes introduced by the platform several years ago, verification was replaced with a paid subscription model.
The meaning of X’s blue checkmark has changed significantly since the platform transitioned from identity verification to a paid subscription system. Research suggests that many users still associate the badge with credibility, which may increase their susceptibility to misleading or false information shared by verified accounts. Consequently, the blue checkmark can contribute to a false perception of trustworthiness even when it provides no assurance of factual accuracy.
